Every April 20th, cannabis culture steps into the spotlight.
What began as a quiet code between a handful of teenagers has grown into a global ritual – equal parts celebration, community gathering, and cultural checkpoint. Today, 4/20 means festivals, smoke sessions, product drops, and advocacy.
But the real story? It starts with a map, a meet-up time, and a group of kids who never actually found what they were looking for.
Where Did 4/20 Come From?
The most credible origin of “420” traces back to the early 1970s in San Rafael, CA.
A group of five high school friends, later known as “The Waldos,” used to meet up after school at exactly 4:20 PM. Their mission: follow a hand-drawn map to find an abandoned cannabis crop hidden in the woods. The map had come from a friend’s brother. Worried about getting caught, he had abandoned a cannabis grow in the woods near Point Reyes and asked them to find it.
Their plan was simple. Every day at 4:20 pm, after school, they would meet at a statue on campus, light up, and begin their search.
They never found it.
How a High School Code Went Global
What turned an inside joke among a few teenagers into a worldwide phenomenon was timing and proximity.
Some of the Waldos had connections to the Grateful Dead, more specifically, the bassist Phil Lesh. Through that connection, the term began circulating within San Rafael and then beyond into the countercultural community. From there, it reached a wider audience through concerts, word of mouth, and eventually the media.
A key moment came in the early 1990s, when a flyer circulated at a Grateful Dead show inviting people to gather at “4:20 on 4/20.” A reporter from High Times, Steve Bloom, was handed the flyer and published it in the magazine.
This flyer spread like wildfire. 4/20 had gone mainstream, fueled by media attention, cannabis advocacy, and shifting public perception. “420” wasn’t just slang anymore; it was an international cultural signal, a shared ritual, and a synchronized event.
Even Bloom later noted that while the Waldos created the term, the anonymous creators of that flyer were the ones who turned it into a holiday.
From Underground Ritual to Global Holiday
Today, April 20th is recognized as a global cannabis holiday, a day for community and shared rituals, and a moment for legalization awareness and progress.
In cities like Denver and Los Angeles, 4/20 celebrations have become major annual events. Though for many, the ideal 4/20 still looks less like a crowd, and more like a perfectly timed moment of peace.
In San Francisco, thousands gather annually at Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park. In other cities, celebrations range from massive festivals to smaller, more personal rituals.
Some events are creative and unexpected—like movie theaters hosting cannabis-themed screenings or workshops where people craft their own pipes. Others lean into food, music, or local culture.
And of course, dispensaries mark the occasion with some of the biggest deals of the year.
The Modern Cannabis Experience
For many people today, cannabis fits into a broader lifestyle that includes stress relief, creative downtime, social connection, and slowing down without guilt.
As cannabis culture has evolved, so has everything around it, including how people store and carry their essentials. Throwing everything into a random bag or dusty drawer isn’t the vibe anymore.
Today’s cannabis consumer is more intentional, more design-conscious, and more interested in safety (especially with pets, roommates, or kids around).
Why Safe Cannabis Storage Matters More Than Ever
With legalization becoming more widespread, accessibility comes with greater responsibility and also more attention to detail.
Whether you’re at home or on the go, safe and organized cannabis storage is imperative, especially if you live with pets or children, travel with your items, prefer privacy and discretion, and/or care about keeping your space clean and elevated.
Your storage should feel just as good as the rest of your routine because it shapes your experience.
A Better Way to Store Your Cannabis
This is exactly where tokebag™ comes in.
We noticed that people were investing in high-quality cannabis products but storing them in ways that felt… temporary at best. Our friends and acquaintances would tell us about bags they couldn’t bring to work, drawers they had to avoid opening, or that one dusty shelf that’s doing its best.
So instead of treating storage as an afterthought, tokebag™ was designed as part of the experience itself.
We designed tokebag™ with discreet storage at the forefront, including biometric security, thoughtful compartmentalization, and a clean, elevated aesthetic that complements your space and style.
Because modern cannabis culture deserves storage that keeps up.
The Bottom Line
4/20 is about intention. Whether you’re celebrating with friends or keeping it low-key on the couch, it’s a moment to enjoy your smoke routine your way.
And sometimes, the smallest upgrades (like how you store your smoke stash) can completely elevate that experience. Because nothing disrupts a good sesh or vibe faster than not knowing where anything is.
Ready to upgrade your setup? Shop tokebag™ and bring a more elevated feel to your 4/20 (and every day after).
